Find out if the problems you are having could be due to a sinus infection.sinus infection

It isn’t always easy to tell what’s going on with your health. After all, there are a lot of conditions out there that can share the same symptoms. Take for example, the common cold and a sinus infection. Both can mimic each other in a lot of the same ways, but our Bend, OR, otolaryngologist Dr. Ryan Gallivan is here to show you how to spot the difference and to know when a sinus infection requires proper medical attention.

What is a sinus infection?

A sinus infection occurs when the nasal passages become infected and inflamed. There are many reasons why a sinus infection might occur, from viruses and bacteria to even being exposed to harsh chemicals.

What are the symptoms of a sinus infection?

If you have a sinus infection you’ll notice pressure and fullness in the face, particularly around the nose and cheeks. You may also suffer from a stuffy or runny nose. Due to the pain and pressure in the face, you may also develop headaches; however, this isn’t a common symptom of a sinus infection.

It’s also not uncommon to experience postnasal drip, in which the mucus from the nasal passageways drains down the back of your throat. If you experience this you may also notice a sore or irritated throat. A sinus infection can also cause persistent bad breath, a pesky cough and a slight fever. As with most infections, you’ll also feel a bit more tired and rundown than usual.

When should I see a doctor?

Most people turn to over-the-counter sinus relief when they think they have an infection. While some people will be able to manage their symptoms until the infection clears up on its own, it’s also important to know when you can handle your symptoms and when our Bend, OR, ENT doctor needs to step in and provide care.
